I took my kids to an errupting volcano.

Volcanoes are dangerous. Some cause extreme tragedy. I read the news, I know this. I've also walked where homes once were, forever buried in rock and ash.
This volcano isn't quite like that. After 3-4 months of lava flow, it may at some point in the next few weeks block a road.
It is possible it will flow into a family farm in a few weeks. Those are the greatest tragedies of this eruption so far, excepting some broken ankles of those who lost their footing hiking to see the thing. In short, it is a perfect volcano for visitors to snap some photos of. Visitors like us.

Day 4: We didn't set out too early in the morning in part because kids make that hard, partly because the safety volunteers aren't onsite till noon anyway, and partly we tried to get there earlier and life conspired against us.

Long story short, we arrived a little irritated but well fed and ready to hike in the afternoon. The trail we used was the busiest place we saw in Iceland. It was fairly even footing for most of the way and fairly steep.

Our kids needed lots of stops to rest. The destination was worth every bit of the journey.

We were so lucky with the weather and getting to the volcano when we did. Trail A (the one we hiked) closed the day after our hike. Lava flow blocked the trail the very next day.

Day 5: The volcano hike tired out the kids, so we followed that day up with a little bit of a slower paced day. It was a bit cold and rainy, so we headed somewhere indoors: The Perlan museum.

It was a really fun place to visit. Very hands on and informative exhibits about Iceland's geology, water, wildlife, and the aurora borealis.

With a combination of an ice cave, a planetarium show, and a cafe with a killer view, the kids loved it and I did too. We ate our sack lunch in the cafe upstairs and bought some dessert so we wouldn't look like the cheapo freeloaders that we definitely are.

Lee and I took turns visiting the Kolaportid flea market while Arthur napped and the big boys picked a movie.

We visited one of Reykjavik's many community pools that evening, it was another hit! There were 3 waterslides and pools varying from warmish to hot.

We ended our evening by visiting the Sun Voyager sculpture.

Day 6: Our last little walk around Reykjavik brought us to the Harpa concert hall and a nice little playground that the boys really enjoyed.

We took to the road, heading west to the Snaefellsnes peninsula. We stopped off in Borgarnes for a delicious lunch and a little wiggle break, and then arrived at the beautiful, isolated little apartment. Our nearest neighbors were the horses. (Get it? NEIGHbors?? I'll see myself out..)

We rounded out our evening by visiting the Raudfeldsgja Gorge. The kids loved hiking into the gorge, trying to navigate around the little river that formed it. We didn't go in very far, but they really enjoyed what we did see.
